  • Community Thrift on Valencia. they have had their better days, but are still pretty decent. they also contribute/donate money to various causes, or at least they used to. the record bin is a trip and half! always really random stuff there. and some of the weirdest furniture i've ever seen.
    • Yeah I've found a couple of cool things at community thrift. The randomness thing is a good way to describe the store. A friend once found a "God bless our mobile home" collector plate . I am still jealous. Random can be awesome.

The absolute best thrifting spot in the bay area is Marin County. You would not beleive the things these rich people get rid of! Everything from clothes to jewelry to housewares to whatever else you can think of.The best thrift shops are Good Stuff on 4th St in San Rafael, Hospice Hodgepodge on Lincoln, Goodwill on Lincoln, Human Society Thrift Shop on San Anselmo Ave in San Anselmo (small but dandy!) St. Ritas on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Fairfax. They have a .50 rack to die over! Also One More Time on 4th St. in San Rafael...great 1.00 rack. These places are crammed with designer clothes and shoes for cheap...especially good if you have to dress well for a job but don't have alot of cash.
To really luck out, check craigslist and Marin IJ website for garage sales......this is where you really clean up! My idea of the ideal day is to grab my list and a map, hit the garage sales, then hit the thrift shops which are pretty close together....then go have a good lunch with all the money you save.
I've been trying to get a shopping group together since I live over here and know where everything is. If anyone is interested, let me know.....

Speaking of San Rafael, if you're looking for stuff for kids, there's a kids' stuff only thrift store on 4th street (I just looked at online yellow pages, and I think it's Outgrown at 1417 4th St), and it is the BEST place to get cheap stuff in excellent condition, from toys to strollers and playpens.
  • I forgot to mention on my last post that if you want to drive that far out, the Thrift Town in El Sobrante is great too. Lots of really nice stuff for dirt cheap. I've never paid more then 5.00 for anything, with the average about 2.00 to 3.00.
To make it worth your while, there is a Dollar Tree store right off the Dam Rd. off ramp where you would get off to go to TT. Oh yeh, there is a Goodwill right across from Thrift Town, so you actually get two thrift stores in one.

I have been in the process of discovering thrift stores for maternity and newborn/ kids stuff ( especially furniture and gear) in the East Bay. Alameda has 2 great resources: Lauren's Closet on Park St. and Fashoin After Passion on Webster St. They both have good deals on furniture and clothing. Lauren's Closet has cutesie new stuff as well. Theres anoher place on College near where it meets Claremont. Can't remember the name. Nice selection and cheap prices. Anybody know of anything else in this category?

My best deal so far was found at the Salvation Army in Alameda; a Glider rocking chair with gliding ottoman in great condition for $39! One less thing to buy new.... yay!

i just discovered that between now and the end of the year, the thrift town in el sobrante is having a monday night football special - all clothing is 30% off on monday nights between 6-9pm. i don't know if this applies to all the thrift towns.

the one in el sobrante also had some great stuff out for halloween, including several high quality plush fur costumes for children. there was one of a giraffe that was so cute! someone's kid needs that!

Yeah, that's pretty standard at all thrift towns every year. It's not worth it to me to do thier coupon thing, as none is particularly close so I don't go often, but they do have those odd monthly coupon books--at least during the summer.

Does anyone go outside the bay for thrift? I used to live in Chico, and it felt like that I had really good luck there, but I can't tell if that was my mental space or what. Sometimes I feel like thrifting the valley just for fun...

i was on a road trip for a month and a half this summer and went thrifting everywhere i could - green river UT, moab UT, boise ID, denver CO, colorado springs CO, canon city CO, santa fe NM - just to name a few places. found great stuff in boise. santa fe thrift stores seem to be largely overpriced.

i think i'm going to vallejo this weekend with some girlfriends and will try to remember to report back.

Santa Fe I would expect to be crowded with artist types--i.e. those who thrift--so the fact that it was too expensive doesn't surprise me. I'd expect the same in Taos.

If you have time, you can go past Vallejo to Fairfield? is it? Where Travis AFB is. I never thrifted there a lot, but I think there's a thrift town there. I think I remember getting lucky there. One thing you can do is at Raley's supermarkets and at thrift towns they often have racks with the local phone books in them. Pick them up and use them--look up thrift. That way you have some idea where to go in a town you don't visit often. Of course, maybe the internet does as well, I've never compared the two.

we went to two thrift stores in vallejo on saturday and both were quite good. our first stop was thrift center, 3274 sonoma blvd. all clothes were 50% off on saturday and one tag color was 75% off. they had a pretty good selection and the 50% off thing made their prices great.

our second stop was value center, 490 redwood st. this store is huge and has a really good selection of stylish, hip clothes. their prices are all over the map, some things were cheap, others were not so cheap.
