I'm a thrift store princess

topic posted Sun, November 5, 2006 - 10:45 AM by  Angry Butterfly
So I was watching my favorite makeover show and frequently someone will have some really ugly peice of clothing and they blame it on being broke and having to buy it at the thrift store... and I'm always like "huh?"

All my friends and I who are into thrifting are running around in Banana Republic cashmere sweaters, Diesel jeans, and BeBe leather jackets! We're all seriously, poor public servants (every person I'm thinking of is a teacher now that I think about it) People probably wonder who our rich sugar daddy is.

Its not a regional thing either, my mom lives in the midwest and she finds more designer stuff than I do.

I'm also always getting all this great stuff for my program, My boss has to remburse me in petty cash all the time because finance gets annoyed when I hand in recepts for $4!

"They blame it on being broke and having to buy it at the thrift store".....That sort of thinking always makes me laugh. As if money automatically buys fabulous style and/or good taste! If something is ugly or unflattering, you pass it up whether it costs $5.00 or $500.00, don't blame your lack of taste on shopping at the thrift store. I think it's terrific fun to have someone compliment you on your outfit, ask you where you got it, and you get to say "I found this at Goodwill for 3 bucks, isn't it great?"

I have been shopping thrift shops for many years. I always receive praise on my clothing. I love it. You can look like a million with so little. It can take some effort to hunt and find the treasures. When you find the find ,it is so rewarding. And it is fun!

I hear ya! I LOVE Banana Republic clothes, they are made SO well, but there's no way in hell I'll pay full price for them when the thrift stores are CRAMMED with almost-new Banana stuff! I'm not much of a label whore, but I do know well-made clothes when I see them.... I agree, my closet looks like I have an almost unlimited shopping budget.

But hell, there's no thrill in buying clothes retail. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. My friends are used to going "Damn, that's an awesome coat/shirt/pair of pants/shoes. Where'd you get it?" and it's usually like "Oh, I got it at the thrift store for $1." And then they go "grumble grumble I need to go shopping with you!"

    Thrift store karma is awesome.

over the past year i've started developing a great collection of bebe clothes, all purchased at thrift stores. i seem to have really good luck with that particular label at thrift stores.

thats funny, I find a lot of bebe too. I thought it was because I live in San Francisco, and its near bebe headquarters so somebody gets a big discount and/or free clothes that end up in the thirft store. I've also seen stuff from the gap marked "sample" If only I were a size 2.

I always ignore the bebe stuff, mostly because 90% of it has "BEBE" somewhere obvious on it (other than the label- I mean, across the front or something). That's obnoxious to me. I haven't gotten past that point to see if it's well-made......

i hate logo clothes and for the most part don't wear any. (does my tribe.net shirt count?) but i've gotten lots of nice bebe stuff and none of it says bebe except on the inside label.

(Bebe is great is for petite women & a great on-trend fix. Got to watch out for the quality though, but at thrift prices...wtfcares? If that works for your body type (and your closet size), that is great. Knowing what brands work for you certainly helps you zero in on something in the endless racks. )

I'd say 30% of my wardrobe is thrift/consignment/vintage. I *love* the thrill of the hunt & the pride of being asked if I am a stylist (lol!) at the check-out line. I think the folks who mix it up in this way are inherently artists- they can see the potential in something & will use it in new & exciting ways. I often have wonderful experiences with other thrift shoppers; when you get to interact & ooh & ahh with them when they find something that is cool for them be it furniture or some cool tchotckie (sp) or some garment that is so obviously made for them. & you become Thrift Allies for about 20 minutes in the store before you move on.

I thrift weekly, mostly in my neighborhood which often gets the most amazing castoffs from wealthy san francisco socialites. Lately, the things I scan for are:

exotic glass, costume jewerly, vintage handbags in leathers or skins(with metal "feet"), wool coats (I have a vintage coat obsession), patina'd brass object d'art, plates, silk scarves, and objects with a certain creepy/old world/ macabre feel.

I also look for the tried & true fabrics such as camel hair, silk, wool, velvet & gaberdine. I have two good tailors (and a dressmaker) & I usually spend a couple of bucks per garment purchased having it tailored, ie sleeve length, hem line, tapered. I search for old fashioned quality construction & fabrics, sometimes for lux brands where that is assured (I am, however, not a brand whore), the proper style for my figure, flattering color, condition &, of course, the bargain.

There is nothing like getting a beautiful wool (lined) skirt for 5$, spending another $10 to get it tapered into a pencil cut & looking a million effing dollars.

I get great satisfaction for thrifting & I have a harder & harder time paying boutique prices on anything (well, except shoes) anymore.

yeah, i definitely find some of my nicest clothes in thrift stores. my last outing, i brought back two merino wool sweaters for me, one italian and one from jos. a bank, and a calvin klein blazer that fit me like it was tailored for me. also picked up for my sweetie a vintage pendleton wool shirt with mother of pearl snaps, a black merino wool turtleneck from brooks bros., and a green lambswool cardigan from j.crew.

i could give a rats ass about brand names, and hate "logo" clothing, but some of these designer labels use good stitching, clean lines and quality fabrics. and of course, nothing beats spending a couple bucks on something that looks and wears as good as new, but probably cost $100 plus the first time somebody bought it.

i've been finding alot of christopher and banks blouses here lately. no logo's, covered seams, good fabric and stiching. i prefer vintage, but these are nice mix ins.

i love the vintage stuff and the funky and interesting things the most, but finding really nice clothes cheap is great too. 3 bucks for italian cashmere? who can complain?

too funny you said that, I just got a black cashmere at St. Vincent de Paul for $3.29. Can't go wrong with that price

Yup, I buy lots of cashmere, both vintage and new. Last week I wore a thrifted sleeveless black cashmere dress to a holiday party and looked like a million bucks. I agree on the Banana Republic--love their stuff, but I never step into their stores.

I'm also surprised at how much nice Eddie Bauer stuff I've found thrifting. It's not all good, but some of the t-shirts are well-constructed in nice, soft fabric. I think the Bebe stuff is mostly too small for me, as I'm older and more curvaceous.

I balk at paying full price for anything but socks, underwear, and jewelry. I'll buy new shoes occasionally, but I've found lots thrifting as well.

I think the people who use thrifting as an excuse for looking crappy just don't have the joy of the hunt and aren't willing to persevere until they find the good stuff.

Okay, I find <I think the people who use thrifting as an excuse for looking crappy just don't have the joy of the hunt and aren't willing to persevere until they find the good stuff. > to be reallly snotty and condescending.
I am not a princess. I am pleased not to be a princess. To me "princess" = "high maitenance" and also "princess" = "snob."
I don't think I've said anything in this thread. I've found it rather dreary and far too focused on brand names, but okay, it's not me, I don't need to say anything, these women are happy and aren't hurting anyone.
Some people aren't princesses by temperment. And in this Golden Age of Self-Proclaimed Princesses it can be very hard to just say, "No, I have other things in my life." Some people are too busy to spend time "hunting" "persevering" and primping. So, you get the polite fiction (ala Miss Manners or Dear Abby answers to rude questions) "Oh, I don't find the good stuff at the thrift stores." One would hope that real ladies would leave it at that.

This thread is great. I love the comment about Paris. I have been thrifting all my life, because as a kid we couldnt afford "mall" clothes. It doesnt take a million $$ to look like a million. I get compliments all the time on how cute/great my outfits are. I love the thrill of the hunt and I do like designer labels but growing up thrifting, I couldnt buy them at retail even if I had an unlimited bank account. And thats no joke. I am who I am. I really love my collection of vintage jackets and evening wear. I find Jones new york dresses and I even found a shelly segal dress which sat around almost a year in my closet before I took it in and wore it to my holiday party this year. It was a smash! Im really proud of the fact that I can find such cool deals. I also sell a lot of my finds on ebay. Which helps finance more shopping for me! LOL And now I am into the reconstructed thing, and thats taking my clothes to another level, it seems almost endless. I wish my closet was!! HEHEHE. So tell me what are the best thrifts in SF in your opinions? I like the thrift town on mission. I found a bunch of my jackets there. I havnt been to too many in SF. I live in San Mateo and my favorites here are the Assistance league (i found vintage feraggamos here and sold on ebay for 3 times what I paid!) and st vincent de paul (i found almost new coach heels here and again sold on ebay for double!) And I try to keep my purchases under $5 an item and that is high! I pay on average $3 per item. Especially things Im gonna sell on ebay. Unless I cant live without it, I wont pay more than $5 and usually that means a pair of shoes or a jacket. So anyway just thought I'd share!

I am far from a princess but I find all my classics at the thrift stores. My thousand dollar working wardrobe was really pulled together for less than $50.00 per season.

I was raised to shop that way. I'll occasionally do 'retail' for crisp bizmeeting touches, but EVERYTHING else comes from thrift stores. I can-and am- the clothes stallion I wouldn't try to be if doing it in malls (which are e-vile!!). I just found out I left half my slacks at my former addy after a move. Oh, well! I'll have them replaced for under a twenty. I love the idea of stickin' it, while at the same time supporting job training of DD adults.

I kind of like the term "Thrift Store Princess". We can also be "Thrift Store Goddesses" if we prefer. Or "The Duchess of Thrift"? I think that's the title I'm keeping.

I had to go to the mall last week in search of shoes. I've worn a size 5 women's for years but shoe sizes have altered so much that now I'm down to a kid's 3 1/2 to 4, and there's no chance of finding "grown-up" shoes at the thrift store for feet like mine. (No chance at the malls here, either, but that's an entirely different topic.) As I am walking through and seeing clothes, even clothes on clearance, it keeps running through my head: "That much for a T-shirt? That much for a sweater? Are they kidding??" I have a closet jammed full of clothes that I've picked up at thrift stores, my most expensive pieces have been $8.99 but most were $4.99 or $2.49 if I hit 50% off day. Made me feel just a little smug!
