I was reading an article in one of my bead mag's and the mentioned this site and bidding on bags with pounds of jewelry in them with an inital bid price of 4 bucks.

Any one shop online with good will? Have any experiences to share?

Bead style magizine did an article on goodwill bead buying last year, but having no experience with "bidding" for stuff online I figured I'd check around and see if anyone knew about it.

The only hold back I see is the shipping, I found a lot of the goodwill locations were on the east coast and the shipping rates were aweful.

I'm attempting this werid idea of "buying" nothing new, i.e. not adding to the over-retailed crap thats everywhere. However beads are my downfall so I'm trying to find another way to get my fix without buying "new" stuff.

I wonder if you'd do something like an on-line bead exchange.
Certainly thrifts, antiques, does ebay count? etsy? Just randome thoughts.

exactly finding different ways to collect beads..... Lately I've been getting a lot of "broken jewerly" requests. Someone has a favorite necklace bracelet etc... actually most people have a pile of these that broke and ended up in a make-up bag to be "fixed" at some point in time, so I get the pieces of whats left, I fix it or more likely make something totally new out of it and keep the left overs as my payment for the repairs. No money exchanged, I get new things to work with and the person gets the treasure back new and improved, its my version of a win-win!

Hey mimmsey, have you considered purchasing your beads only from Reservations? Indian beads as it were? They make new ones but you are putting money in a much needed place this way. I think Pine ridge in nebraska offers beads. if not online I would be happy to pick some up for you. :D

            Tatt.

              What is the variety available?

Some of the various beads available: Venetian Glass, Czech glass, Bone (camel, typically--so I'm assuming middle east), horn (origen uncertain), pearl, Indian (subcontinent) Lampwork (glass again), Dze (tibetan), African Agate, Hill Tribe (SE Asia) Silver, shell (various coastal areas), seeds (unknown), delica, netsuke (from Japan, various stones and wood), chinese ceramic, peruvian ceramic, sandcastle (africa), etc, etc.

I don't know what they make in Pine Ridge, or what materials they use, but my guess is that unless one is working within a very narrow idiom, that it wouldn't be "enough." Even the indian beadwork of the 19th century used beads traded from far away. Shell beads didn't get to the great plains "naturally." My point is that there are a lot of wonderful beads from all over and many made by persons who could use the money in their local economy. And that beadworkers may want to use a broad range of the products.

From personal experience the beads available are glass and horn and stone copper, tin, gold, brass etc. . They also make news paper beads as well as boiled leather.
Feathers and stone and and and. I do not believe I suggested this as an exclusive but as an addition to the commercially available.
Further You have to consider that the beads available from pine ridge hold a certain provenance as well as they are EXTREMELY cheap.
Perhaps this is too narrow for some but only those who think its the only source available yes?

I'm puzzled that things on this website are so much cheaper than in the stores! Fur coats for $6? Dude.

From what I've seen on the Goodwill auctions, I can find the same stuff cheaper at their stores... or other stores like St. Vincent de Paul or Salvation Army. I just go on half price days or buy when things are the right "color" tags. I've not yet fully indulged in the auction site yet, as the few times I've been there I didn't see anything that I was interested enough. Maybe I have to search it more.

I'm finding that there isn't a lot there that would work for me right off but there is a lot on there that would work reconstructed. the two shirts that i won might not need tweaking but i won't know till they get here - either way they're awesome.

Ok, so the shirts showed up with no ill effects!

One is useable nearly as is except that it's not the right size, so I'll have to add some fabric gussets. Not a problem! The other is not useable at all really, it's an awful pattern in reality, the picture made it look a lot better. I'm not sure what I'll do with it but I'll think of something. Maybe a lining for a bag...

Anyway, no ill effects from ordering!
