What is yours?

Mine is a fancy wool coat from the 50's. Kinda like a shawl, goes down to my calves, satin lining on the inside, has a front panal with pockets. Had to replace the buttons but it only cost $10.

I beautifully framed and matted gorgeous poster that is huge (33"x44") of my favorite movie...Nightmare Before Christmas. Brand new shrinkwrapped and just in divine shape. I paid $26 for it, but it's worth a lot more.

I wonder if that's the reversible poster that was given out as a promo when the movie was first released? they were giving them away if you bought merchandise at Macys and other stores. I had one and a stupid ex roomie tore it taking it down from the wall and ruined it. Grrrr!

My favorite thrift find ever is a victorian oil painting of waterlilies with a gilded bead frame. $3.95 at Goodwill years ago.

so far among my plunder has been my Johnny Eagle Leutenant's sidearm. These were produced for a short time in the late 60s early 70s and shot real plastic bullets. i always wanted one as a kid; never got it. The one I found at a garage sale was in perfect, unplayed-with condition for $3. It sold later on ebay for $79!! I have other miraculous finds but this one currently tops the list for turnaround.

Doc Marten mailman type shoes.. $4
And for my daughter, I got docs combat style boots for $6, and all three kids wore them.

One time, I bought a pair of pants for a couple bucks, and found a $5 bill in the pocket. Whoo!

Speaking of finding money in the pocket....
I met a man recently that was buying a pair of jeans at a Goodwill store in Florida. He had already paid for them and when the cashier was bagging them, about $300 fell out of the pocket. The cashier insisted that the money belonged to Goodwill since the pants were still in the store.
Is that a bunch of shit or what?

There have been *many* but the two tops are:
1---Absolutely CLASSIC PERFECT 1960's mod mid-calf pumpkin colored suede coat with detachable Sherlock Holmes style collar and 3-colored thread stitching around the seams...it was marked $15.99, insultingly above my threshold for thrift store impulse buys, but as I was about to leave the store I noticed the sign "Today purple tags 25 cents"....yep, it had a purple tag! Sadly that thrift store went away, may it rest in peace.

2--A chopping block, heavy, thick, on wheels with a shelf below, the kind that goes for $400 in the chef store for $20.

Well, I'm not sure this was my best find, the story is fun....

There was an electric organ for sale at my local thrift store and it was marked $500 !! I admired it - though it would give my daughter a way to prctice piano - but told the manager of the store there was no way - I just couldn't buy it. He asked me how much I was willing to spend, and I said $20.

He said, "Tell you what. If you promise never to bring it back here, I'll let you have it for $20 bucks".

It wasn't until I was trying to figure out how to get it home that I realized the thing wighed a TON AND A HALF! No wonder he didn't want it back - he probably got a hernia accepting it the first time..

I am an auction and thrift queen. so far the best thing I've ever gotten is my dining room set. It's a wooden traditional styled set. It has six chairs and with the table and two leaves. I paid 40 bucks!!! It's in excellent condition. All I really had to do was clean the cushions and polish the tabe.

sheeesh, where does the time go?

so yeah, i do shop at Frenchies when i can.
most of the good ones are outside the city and i am car-less.

to explain Frenchies, its set up sorttof like a by the pound place in giant bins and mishmashed racks and its cheap,
        but still priced per item.
its one of those 'thrill of the hunt' scenarios
absolutely no clue what you'll find.

i miss going to the St Vincent du Pauls by the pound in LA

always scored on great jackets and sweaters
cuz who needs that stuff there eh?

Well, I think I will say my best find ever is the first Quicksilver Messenger Service record. I don't know if this is hard to find or anything (I haven't seen it anywhere else though, I don't think I've ever seen it on cd either...) but it introduced me to this awesome band from the late 60s san fransisco scene. John Cipollina is an amazing guitarist with an incredibly unique style. I've never heard anyone play the guitar like this. It's like he's sculpting the sound or something, he makes the feedback work for him, it's really indescribable. ok, sorry that was like way off topic!

Don't know if it's my 'Best' find but I did get a heavy foam dressmaker's dummy that's about my size & changeable for $10 this week after hoping hoping hoping to find one some day cz I left my own back on the farm when I moved thinking I would Never need it again & then did not want to pay $$$ that they cost now.

I think mine is a pristine 50s faux-fur B. Altman & Co. NY long coat. It has great detail, including fabric rosette buttons, an attached belt in back, fully lined, etc. I think it was originally around $35 but with the sales going on I got it for $8 (our Goodwill combines discounts!).

mine was a brown leather Coach purse, which got at the Goodwill Outlet store, which is 1.29 per pound. That means that I paid about $2.00 for a Coach purse.

second best: just last week, I got a long grey wool coat at Value Village. I'd seen it two weeks before and didn't get it because it was $20. But then was in there on a day when all green tags were $.99! You know I went back the VV where it was and bought it for $.99!! I am still basking in the glory of that purchase.

My most recent "best find ever" was a crazy vintage clown doll..really big..face made of old plastic..body made of individual quilt circles.strung together...really neato (but kinda scary looking)..only 2 bucks.
On the same thrifty trip, I bought another inexpensice bedspread quilt and several interesting, wacky patchwork quilt pillows..I am a quiltaholic.

It's a tie between two items:

        1) A navy-blue cashmere coat from either the late 50s/early 60s (it may be even older) that looked like it had never been worn. Absolutely mint condition, and the best coat I've ever had. Marked at five dollars, but I got it for half price. The cut is fantastic and I feel like Jackie Kennedy every time I wear it!

        2) A Marimekko batik shirtwaist dress from the 70s that I picked up for a buck.

I hate fake fur it's too fake looking, in the late 1970's they made coats of string, I fell in love because they had the fur feeling without the fakeness. Of course I could not afford one. I found one in a thrift shop years later, I can't remeber what I paid, it wasn't much. The thing is I still wear that coat! And it's machine washable because it's just string on a knitted backing. Now when I wear it it's so unique and people always want to know where they can get one.

I think that's part of the Thrifting high = wearing extra cool stuff that we know is artistically special & that makes us special.

HI Denise! Goodwill and VV are my favorite stores in the Seattle area, after my local Shop'n Save closed. My favorite find?

A Picasso print, hidden underneath a framed drawing. I was looking for frames, and I always peek to see what's underneath. Even better - it was half price day for that tag color, so I got it for 2 bucks! I think it's worth about $1,000 now!

My best find ever would probably ahve to be a leather jacket in absolutely beautiful condition for $10 at a Goodwill downtown. I confess, it was an impulse buy, and since I live down here in the valley where it's always hot I haven't had a chance to wear it, yet.

I found a size 12 wool, lined skirt and jacket suit, color cranberry/burgundy and I refuse to pay Ebay fees. PM if interested and serious. Suit is gorgeous, pardon the pun but its suitable for office. Alas, I am not a size 12.
      • Re: best find ever

        Sun, August 14, 2005 - 10:57 PM
I am a size 12 but have no occasion to wear such a suit, alas. But it's such a temptation. I love suits! Especially wool suits! I gave a bunch of them away years ago (long before eBay or the Internet...I could have made some money). I just don't go anywhere that requires a suit, and needed the closet space.

On the plus side, I found a scrumptious vintage 60's fringed suede jacket for $4.50, as well as an Army trenchcoat for $3. Both of these garments are things I have wanted (and was searching high and low to get) for the past twenty years. Now that I have both (and wear them constantly), I figure there's not much else on my want list...but I'm always open to new discoveries. And something by Chanel would be nice.

I don't know about the best, but one of them was definitely a tall Victorian marble top pedestal from the Goodwill. It was a great day in Whoville for me the day I came upon that, for sure.

I've also come across a couple of gorgeous 50s French-styled arm chairs from the Goodwill and Salvation Army, one with a needlepoint seat. So that was pretty exciting.

I'd say it's about every couple of months though I find something that makes me shake my head in awe of what stuff people give away. It's a bit like walking a beach and seeing what washes up on shore. :-)

    2) the Perfect Jeans
    3) Red, suade leather pants for $2.50
    4) t-shirt that says "Elf on strike" I don't know what it was from or what it means, but I just like it
    5) Pretty much every pair of shoes I own

Best ever find is the long stretchy peignoir day coat thingie I got at the Flea Market for a buck. It is the cornerstone of one of my Burning Man outfits (I call it the Porn Star outfit) and I'm making a pattern to make more of these in other colors/fabrics.

Second best was a mahogany Zenith TV case from the 40's or 50's that I found in the attic of a barn, collecting acorn shells and dust. Bought it for $5, cleaned it up, shined it with Mahogany oil a neighbor loaned me, took out the guts of the TV and put the glass from the front inside as a shelf. It's my stereo cabinet, and fits all the components beautifully.

I just came home from The Bins in Vancouver with a kidney-shaped dressing table, probably from the late 1940's. It has arms that swing out and you put a skirting around them so that when it's closed the drawers don't show. It needs repainting and a new skirt (looks like someone replaced that in the 80's so it's pretty ghastly), but it's in perfect condition otherwise and it cost me 8 bucks. I have been looking for one of these for YEARS, so I am quite the happy camper right now!

Just last week I hit St. Vincents on a clearance sale. All clothes $4.99 and up were on sale for $1.99. I scored a "La Merde" brand Professor Booty jacket so new most of the pockets were still hemmed shut. It was love at first sight and retails around $200. Its hard not to wear it everyday.
