Thrifting Materials for building

topic posted Thu, September 6, 2007 - 3:44 PM by  Cherry------...
We need to do some interior remodeling and of course its on a budget....

any ideas on finding materials second hand? I know this falls into the odd question category, but I figured hey it can't hurt to ask, I know you can find doors at the dump in the salvage\ for sale yard anyone had luck there with construction materials?

St.Vinnie's Yards seem to ebb and flo. Having interests in off-grid living a few years back found me there and in possession of a swarm (..a Canadian swarm-weighs up a little less...) of LED lights...'n those things can get expensive! Enough to track light a living room and do storage rooms. I can often find molding and a few basic non-code items. Plumbing/Electric issues are not really solved this way-mostly cuz of the rocket-to-the-moon costs of the raw materials these days-no one would donate, anyway....

    A firm location would help.

In the east bay (California, Berkeley and Oakland) we have Omega Salvage (although not cheap--but they do get some wonderful archetectural details) and Urban Ore. You might try googling or yellow paging "Salvage."

I'm thinking that since the contracter I know, returns his unused materials that calling people in the business won't do much good, but maybe I'm wrong.

Go to where you see complete renovations of older homes - some of the amazing pieces you'll find. Doors especially. Salvage yards yes, but usually lots will have been gone through. Let's not forget craigslist and contacting contractors who do renovation work. Lots of times, people will take things or know of things that are available in any area by talking with experienced n connected contractors.
