I've done the local freecycle yahoo groups.

(btw, the freecycle founder was given an environmental award by the EPA.)

i belong to our local freecycle BB and so far i've given away an electric keyboard to a student musician and received: a working if slightly dented 110v dryer for my little cabin, a HUGE plum-velvet club chair that was made-to-order for the woman i got it from, duck feather pillows and all, and a 22" CRT monitor that works perfectly.

in the case of the chair, it was quite an undertaking to go get it, and the pillows had been chewed by the dog, but were fixable, and the monitor was replaced only b/c the guy went to a flat screen LCD.

usually it's just a matter of going to pick things up (and being the one they pick to give to, which is up to the giver.)

highly, highly recommend it as a great way to keep goods circulating while generating lots of good will!

Last year the cover for our dome at Burning Man was made from old curtains I requested from Freecycle. If you really want something you have to be pretty quick on the draw. I get the digest version and miss most of the offers that I'd like.

I belonged to the two in my area for a while but was never online enough (which I think its odd because I'm online all the time) to get in on any of the deals. I'm thinking of getting back on there though, it was good and I did get rid of a bunch of books.
