My local Goodwill was closed for a few months for remodeling (funny though, it was also after their corporate office received a lot of complaints of shady dealings at the store). Anyway, they reopened a few weeks ago and although the prices aren't necessarily any lower, there seems to be much better quality (and better choices of) clothing now. They also have a new (?) thing where they give out a 40% off coupon during the week that can be used on almost everything on the following Saturday.

I'm wondering if the quality's improved due to things not disappearing before hitting the racks now. Quality for me means cute, funky, unique stuff that's not ripped or stained, and may be recent or 'vintage' (ie. 80s-90s). I've found so much cool (IMHO) clothing already it's ridiculous. :)

Has anyone else noticed a GW store remodel or change their policies recently? Has the merchandise improved at your store? Just curious, I hope this is a trend for all their stores.

There is one in particular where I shop that has a kid area where he can play to his heart's content with bins full of stuff, we can always get something, it doesn't matter if he breaks something, there are usually other kids there, and when he's done with that he can look at other things in the store and if he breaks something I can afford to pay for it.
All my friends and I who are into thrifting are running around in Banana Republic cashmere sweaters, Diesel jeans, and BeBe leather jackets! We're all seriously, poor public servants (every person I'm thinking of is a teacher now that I think about it) People probably wonder who our rich sugar daddy is.
Its not a regional thing either, my mom lives in the midwest and she finds more designer stuff than I do.

Hi, new to this tribe but been thifting most of my life. I still remember my first visit to the Goodwill in SF. It was coming on Christmas and I was living with my dad and he must have been between jobs or something. We went to get ornaments for our sad little Christmas tree and I was blown away by all the stuff in there. I've always had an affinity for old things and it seemed like I had finally landed on my home planet!

Meanwhile, there is a lot here about the great clothes, but I wonder if others go to scavenge craft supplies? Would love to hear great score stories about that. Recently I found the most amazing thread bonanza. The price was high, total of a bout $16, but I must have walked away with about a $100 worth of high quality thread (embroidery, needlepoint, etc.) I couldn't have gotten elsewhere. We have some great thrift stores here (in Central/Southern Nevada area). Las Vegas has amazing thrift stores but I never go there (would have to be in Vegas, yuck!). I go to the bargain barns in a town called Pahrump and always find great craft stuff. Usually it's a big ziploc bag of assorted stuff for a buck or two. Before my kid was born I spent more time looking for clothes and often found great stuff donated by the women who work in the brothels in town.

My son and I spent all day on Sunday searching through the stacks of really cool clothes and toys. I am collecting bud vases to use in my 2008 wedding, and I hit the jackpot this weekend! The one thing that I was quite impressed with is that it is right in the same area of a lot of "super" chain stores like Target and Wal-Mart, and it seems like alot of the things that these stores are throwing away, make it to the shelves of the SA story, which makes me happy, at lease someone may be able to use it and it does not end up cluttering our landfills!! I wonder if this is just certain stores that do this, or if it is company-wide that they donate the left-over stock of items that they are unable to sell??

There are always stories on the news at year-end, showing people making big donations to get their year-end tax deductions, so the thrifting is always pretty good right after the start of the new year, and we had a great time! I probably bought ten sweaters/tops/T-shirts, including some with beading and one with the store tag still attached, and paid $4.99 for each one. (I wore one of the beaded tops on a date last night and my date told me I looked fabulous. He was even impressed when I told him where I picked up this little number!) There were lots of VHS tapes to be had, since everyone is converting to DVD, and we probably bought a dozen of those. My son collects the Pokemon character Pikachu, and the "find of the day" was a Pikachu 35 MM camera. We probably spent a little over $100, and we'll be saving our money to do this again next January.

You can sign up to get weekly emails with information about sales taking place in your area. You can specify the distance you're willing to travel. I looooove it. They don't spam me or send extra crap- it's just a straightforward FYI.

Meanwhile, up here in Northern California (east bay, SF Bay Area), I've grown spoiled by the huge, well-lit, clean thrift stores.... I mean, for god's sake, one chain of them has DRESSING ROOM attendants! My grandmother was shocked to hear this, and just LAUGHED.... she LOVES coming to visit, because we have such amazing thrift stores up here. And the prices are still very reasonable, for the most part.

Well, I went back down to Ventura this weekend, and the thrift stores have gone UPSCALE- at least with their prices. $1-3 more for shirts than up here, $2-5 more for pants...just outrageous prices. And ANYTHING that looks vaguely "hip" or alternative is way overpriced. I saw a small black tulle skirt marked for $35!!! And it was probably $12 new. Pfth. And meanwhile, there's no dressing rooms, women are fighting over the ONE mirror in the store, and it's just still icky...but it's definitely TRENDY to thrift now!

I Need Feedback On An Idea Regarding Thrifting

I live in the Bay Area, and I comb the thrift shops. Alot of times I find great things that don't fit me, and it drives me nuts to think that someone could use it that may never find it...ot worse yet, that the e-bayers find it and sell it for a fortune.
Years ago they used to have lingerie auctions in clubs around the Bay. I'm thinking of tweaking that idea, but instead of lingerie having thrift store and garage sale treasures. Dryell has a home dry cleaning kit that is really good, so I could clean things before I resold them.
I'm thinking of putting together outfits of same size clothes, having a fashion show type thing and starting the bidding at one or two dollars. If no one bids on the whole outfit then they can bid on individual pieces.
I thought of also including a way to have a fashion exchange, though I'm still working on that.
I work at The Purple Onion, so I was thinking of doing it there. I don't really care about making a ton of money, if I break even or find a wonderful find at the clothing exchange that would be good enough for me. I'm looking at it as a nice relaxing way for people to come in on an off night, have a drink or two, maybe find something fabulous for cheap.
What do you think of this idea? Does it sound like something that would have any kind of appeal? I welcome all advice, criticism or whatever. I'd rather hear it now then after I invest money in the project only to find out it's a dud.

a comment about "supporting the non-profits that run thrift stores" got me womdering if you all know much about who some of these folks are. as far as i know, many thrift stores a fairly benign conservatve christian charities, some of them are actually doing good work.

but the salvation army is another story entirely - they are a religious order that actually functions as an 'army', with a heirarchy of rank, officer, cadet, etc. and are a notoriously sexist, racist and homophobic organization. they campaigned bush to exempt them from federal anti-discrimination law http://www.workers.org/ww/2001/salvation0726.php so they could avoid hiring gay folk, and female church members are not allowed to hold higher rank than their husbands.

anybody with more info on this i would love to hear, and id also like to open this up to discuss the politics and ethics of the other charities that use thrift stores to generate funds.

So, I had a horrible yard sale on Saturday. I only sold $1.50 worth of stuff, so by noon, I packed everything up and I took it to the Goodwill down the street to donate.

In the parking lot, there was a humongous tow truck. It was the kind with the big flat bed in the back, not the kind where they pull the car behind it on two wheels. Anyway, the tow truck had just loaded up a van style camper on top and he was preparing to haul it away. They asked me to move my car, which I gladly did because as I was looking at the tow truck, I was thinking "THAT VAN DOESN'T LOOK VERY SECURE UP THERE, BUT I'M SURE THE GUY KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING."

So, I donated my crap and moved my car, and I was just about to leave the parking lot. All of the sudden, I hear this loud CRASH. The van fell off the back of the tow truck and the front half of it was on the tow truck held by the chains and the back half was on the asphalt. Then, I guess because of the weight of being half-on and half-off the truck, the camper cracked in half up the middle.

I got the hell out of there so fast I left skid marks!!! I don't know what happened, but I did not want to stick around to find out!!!

And I think many assume that it just gets bundled up randomly straight from there and then Savers or whomever buys the bundles and sorts and prices it and puts it on the rack. But did you know that there is actually a level of sorting that goes on *before* it hits the retail level? So that these big vintage houses that are looking for lots of Izods or vintage track jackets or whatever is the hot thing in vintage land can buy them directly from the wholesale thrift place?

If anyone has any insight into the behind the scenes workings of all this, I'd *love* to know more. Because I suspect that this is why its so darned hard for me to find things like that in Savers and such when I used to come across them all the time and then I go into one of the million vintage boutiques and there's stacks of the trendy stuff. Not all of this is estate sales, either.
I make them and I also collect them.
That is one of the main things i hunt down when I go to the thrifty stores..i give them a good home too..I seldom-if ever resell them.

Yesterday I bought a granny sewing doll. I am completely in love.
She isn't really a doll...she is a sewing basket/pin cushion...lady for $1.50
Her body consists of a glass jar with half of a plastic dishwashing soap bottle on top.
The glass jar is hidden under her skirt and can be filled with sewing stuff..maybe buttons or something. Her vintage patchwork print dress is very well made and has a loop for sissors and a pocket for a thimble...(there was a znice sterling thimble in the pocket) there are also pockets all around the hem of the dress for spools of thread...there were spools in the pockets) There is a bustle on the back of her dress that is a pin cushion.
Her face is made of old plastic and she has little plastic arms glued inside the sleeves of her dress..she has an old lady wig and a bonnet. She so totally rocks...and she now lives next to my sewing machine.
Does anybody else share my love of homemade toys from the thrift store?

On the other hand, have you ever found something that looked worn, but just felt so good when you touched it you had to take it home?

A few years ago I was looking for a knitted or crocheted shawl. There were 5 or 6 on the rack...some looked like they had never been worn. One of them was a worn looking white hairpin lace triangular shawl with fringe. Even though the others were newer, well-made, and seemed a better buy, once I picked up the hairpin lace shawl I just couldn't put it down. The others had a sad feeling to then, as if someone had made them as a gift and the person who received them didn't want them. The hairpin lace shawl felt as if it were well loved and well used by the person it was given to.

I've had the shawl for a few years. In spite of the open weave, it's very warm, and always feels so good when I put it on.
But they were from a woman's travels in the 50-60s (the sellar's ex-mother in law) & each wrapped in cellophane & just too amazing in a group to split up. The vendor next to the fella offered $50 fore I could say yes to $30 but the guy gave em to me & added 8 old grass fans in mint condition & a few feather ones that are ok.....
There are dolls from Fiji, China, all over parts of India, the Slav countries....

The largest is a man from Afganistan that I swear is the image of you know who carring a boquet of red flowers & a whisk fan....
There's Kryzgystan & the whole eastren area represented through N. Africa. I tried to joke with the guy that he could be suspected of being a terrorist with all the little terrorist ethnic dolls but he didn't get it not being into dolls or travel.....

I took a little trip after payday and ended up with a burgundy-rust soft velvet strapless J. Crew dress. Not terribly exciting, but it fits and is pretty so I'm happy. I also picked up a pair of brass candlesticks from India with a nice patina on the base.

I'm still searching for nicer work clothing that fits, but I'm also now on the lookout for nicer out-of-the-ordinary vintage or newer items to wear. Sort of a luxury-thrifting mindset. ;)

The other items I look for are to fulfill my dream of an East Indian-influenced bedroom. I've picked up several items of clothing (pretty colors and beadwork/embroidery for pillows), a huge scarf (valance? or wall cover), the brass candlesticks, and some carved wood items (one is a trivet that I envision on the wall with fabric flowing out of it, like a headboard).

Here are links to some listed in the bay area:
What I was wondering was:

which ones on the lists are worth visiting in the San Jose area?
are they expensive, generally?
do they allow haggling?
anything else that would be useful to know about salvage yards before visiting?

So, there's this thrift store I like to visit on occasion that's out of my way. The clerk (perhaps the manager?) is usually pretty cool to me, she looks fairly hip and I know she peruses the stock for cool things (she told me in the past). But the last time I went in, I could see her sizing me up (I wasn't all gothed up for once) and when I checked out her reception was icy cool and she charged me more for the clothing (I know I'm helping charity so it doesn't bother me).

I'm thinking she must have guessed I was going to resell (which I haven't decided yet, I just like to collect vintage items) and treated me accordingly. I read an article in the past about thrifts in the bay area and how everyone is like a hawk and they're cold towards one another and don't befriend anyone. I've just never experienced this kind of thing first-hand. I find it kind of sad. It takes the fun out of it when someone looks at you like you're a shark, y'know? I don't make a living out of reselling so it's not foremost on my thrifting list.

Anyone else deal with this type of attitude? How do you get past it?

The design is so spiffing cool, and it's in great condition. Just looking at it, one is filled the conviction that one Must Have This Coat!

The only trouble is, it is a little too small for me.

I bought it anyway.

What should I do with it? I bet I could make a profit re-selling it in the right venue (since, as I said, it is The Best Coat EVER)--has anyone had success with this? Thoughts on ebay/craigslist/vintage stores?

Some of the awesomest thrifting I've ever done was in Oakdale, CA in the central valley...it was as though hundreds of little old ladies had died and donated their estates, and there were no hipster kids around to snap the stuff up. If you live in the bay area, it might be worth it to day trip inland for some serious thrifting. Has anyone else found this?

Generally I spend time between SF and LA, and I'm just about to transition back to LA again. I'm an astrologist that specializes in relationship guidance, insight into human sexuality through astrology, including likely turnons and fetishes of each sign and who they work well with, etc and spiritual advice. I read the Goddess Guidance Cards as well, an exceptionally powerful and uplifting deck of tarot cards that have helped alter the course of many people's lives since they first came into my hands. I offer my services by donation and take trades, talk to me about what it is you have to offer and we'll see if we can work out a deal. I'm also fundraising for Dream CO(llective) dreamcollective.tribe.net which is a travelling higher conscious road show with performance art, music and art that's hitting the road in June. A huge need right now is fabrics and materials for decorations.

I started studying astrology after it was proven to me to have validity because it helps me give people deeper guidance, psychological analysis and triggers my intuitive senses when I apply them to a personal problem for someone. I'm completely non-judgemental and open-minded, you can talk to me about almost anything and I'll listen and give you the best insight I can. I'm deeply committed to being a healer in this regard, even if you don't have money I'll sit and do a reading, just make me dinner, buy me food or offer me a couch to stay. Or simply tell me you need help, I'm not one to say no to that.
